Extreme Grace
By: Pastor Ben Aguirre
Romans 5:20 (NKJV Strong's) But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more,
I for one have had concerns over what was labeled the “extreme grace” message. I used terms that are common to describe a message of excess. However, I have been corrected. The Bible uses a word translated “abounded” to explain this grace as an answer to the abounding sin. “ hyperperisseuō“ is defined as to super-abound: — abound much more, exceeding. It is an answer to abounding sin which Paul used another Greek Word to describe. My take on why Paul has done this was to separate the abounding sin from the abounding grace and emphasize much more. You see, the real grace is an empowerment over sin, not a license to indulge in the flesh. This is the real biblical message of grace. God is now involved personally and we are under grace (Romans 6:14) and sin’s dominion has been taken away. It’s not that we can’t sin but we don’t have to! We don’t have to obey sin in the flesh but we are now in a position to obey God’s Spirit of grace. Look at this passage.
Titus 2:11-12 (NKJV Strong's)
11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,
The grace of God does not encourage indulgence in the flesh but empowers to live as we should. So any teaching or message that has grace as a license is the wrong message.
So then, am I for “extreme grace”? Absolutely! God has given us grace abundant and we are on the marvelous journey of grace to grace!
